Minimum wage rates are set to increase in both New York and New Jersey starting January 1. The raises come as both states’ minimum wages already exceed the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour.
In New York, the minimum wage for most workers will increase to $16.50 an hour, up from $15.00, with some areas seeing a more significant rise to $16.50. The state plans to adjust the rate annually until 2026 and tie it to the federal Consumer Price Index starting in 2027.
In New Jersey, the minimum wage will increase by 36 cents to $15.49 an hour. The state’s minimum wage was previously set at $8.60 an hour but has been gradually increased since 2019.
While both states’ increases are intended to keep pace with inflation, workers who receive tips or work in specific sectors may see different rates. If a worker is due for an increase but doesn’t receive it, they can contact the respective state labor department for assistance.
