Minn. traffic fatalities are down, a trend that’s being closely watched by officials.
The state has seen more than 400 deaths each year for four years. However, this year is different with 308 fatalities so far. This decrease could help the state record fewer than 400 deaths for the first time since the pandemic.
To celebrate this progress, over 900 traffic safety professionals met in Prior Lake to discuss ways to reduce traffic fatalities. They talked about using cameras and crash reports to identify high-risk areas, reducing risky driving, and enforcing cannabis and DWI laws.
The director of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety, Mike Hanson, said he’s proud of the progress but wants to see even lower numbers. He set a goal of having fewer than 1 fatality per day to declare “mission accomplished.” The state has seen some success in reducing fatalities since 2016, when it had fewer than 400 deaths each year.
