Minneapolis City Council Member Charged with Drunken Driving

A Minneapolis City Council member, Alondra Espejel Cano, has been charged with two counts of drunken driving after crashing into a parked car while intoxicated. Espejel, 44, refused to take field sobriety tests and faced police commands during her arrest. She was taken into custody on Tuesday evening and is currently being held on $6,000 bail ahead of an November 13 court appearance.

As a former council member, Espejel made headlines in 2020 when she called for the Minneapolis Police Department’s abolition alongside other council members. Her proposal gained little traction amidst rising violent crime rates and opposition from voters. After serving in the council from 2013 to 2022, Espejel chose not to seek re-election.

Espejel was initially reported by police to have been struck by an SUV while parked on S. 4th Street. However, officers soon discovered that the alleged driver, identified as Espejel, refused to identify herself and showed signs of intoxication.
