Minnesota High School Boys Hockey State Tournament Day 1 Recap

The 2025 Minnesota high school boys hockey state tournament kicked off on Wednesday, March 5, at the Xcel Energy Center with the Class 1A quarterfinals. Here’s a recap of the day’s games and scores.

Three teams advanced to the semifinals: St. Cloud Cathedral, Orono, and Hibbing/Chisholm. In the top matchup, St. Cloud Cathedral edged Mahtomedi 3-0 behind goalie Keaton LeGrande’s 24 saves and forward Joey Gillespie’s two goals, including a short-handed score.

Orono outlasted Northfield 8-2 with clinical chances despite being outshooting their opponents 23-21. Hibbing/Chisholm dominated Luverne 7-0 to move on to the semifinals. East Grand Forks also advanced 3-0 against Northern Lakes, thanks to its strong special teams and penalty kill.
