Minnesota House Rejects Transgender Athlete Ban Bill

The Minnesota House voted 67-66 in favor of a bill to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ sports, but ultimately fell short due to a lack of the required 68 votes. The bill’s author, Rep. Peggy Scott (R-Andover), argued that fairness and safety issues are at play when it comes to boys and girls competing in athletics.

However, opponents of the bill, including Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and transgender advocates, say it would unfairly target and bully children who don’t conform to traditional notions of femininity. They argue that allowing trans athletes to participate has already been allowed for over a decade in Minnesota, and that there is no evidence to suggest that it’s causing problems.

Supporters like former Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, who testified before the bill, say that preserving female sports teams is essential, but opponents counter that the bill ignores more pressing issues facing Minnesotans, such as rising childcare and healthcare costs.
