Minnesota Reports Record High Whooping Cough Cases

Minnesota is experiencing its highest number of whooping cough cases in over a decade, according to the state Department of Health. As of last Wednesday, 2,324 cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, were reported, mostly in the Twin Cities metro area. This is the highest number since 2012.

The disease typically peaks every three to five years, and the recent surge suggests a return to pre-pandemic trends. In Minnesota, 77 infants and 34 people have been hospitalized due to the illness.

Vaccination is crucial in preventing and reducing the spread of whooping cough. The health department urges pregnant women and children to receive on-time vaccinations, while adults are advised to receive booster shots every 10 years. With declining immunization rates among Minnesota kindergartners, officials are concerned about the potential for outbreaks.

The median age of those with whooping cough in Minnesota is 14, and people with the illness are contagious for 21 days or until they complete five days of antibiotics.
