Mississippi Sen. John Horhn Wins Democratic Nomination for Jackson Mayor

Mississippi Sen. John Horhn has secured the Democratic nomination for Jackson mayor, defeating incumbent Chokwe A. Lumumba in a runoff election. Horhn received about 75% of the votes cast in the April 22 runoff, marking his third attempt at winning the office after launching his first campaign in 2009.

Horhn’s victory came as no surprise to supporters, who praised his perseverance and persistence throughout the campaign. “We all know the story of the little engine that was just trying to get up the mountain,” Horhn told his supporters Tuesday night. “He had perseverance and persistence. Today, I feel like that little engine that could.”

As mayor, Horhn has promised to focus on improving quality of life for Jackson residents by addressing issues such as crime prevention and economic development. His administration will also prioritize community-based initiatives and work closely with local leaders to build a more sustainable future.

Horhn’s win marks the end of Lumumba’s eight-year tenure as mayor, which was marked by both successes and controversies. Despite his efforts to keep spirits up after losing the election, tears streamed down Lumumba’s face during his concession speech, where he thanked his supporters and reminded them that Jackson is an “amazing city filled with amazing people.”

Lumumba had vowed to continue supporting the city as an organizer and attorney, and promised to fight for its assets, including the airport, water system, and public schools. His message echoed through the night, as he vowed not to stop fighting for what he believes in.

The general election will take place on June 3, with Horhn facing an uncertain future ahead. However, his supporters are optimistic about his chances of becoming the next mayor of Jackson.
