Mississippi Senate Special Election: Letitia Johnson vs Kamesha Mumford

Mississippians will vote on December 2 for a new senator in the special election runoff. The seat was previously held by John Horhn, who became Jackson’s mayor after voters elected him in June.

Letitia Johnson and Kamesha Mumford are running in the nonpartisan election. A guide to each candidate’s views on issues is available online.

Letitia Johnson aims to improve public schools, increase teachers’ salaries, and make college education more affordable. She also wants to provide health-care coverage and mental health services to Mississippians.

Kamesha Mumford focuses on crime prevention, not just punishment. She wants to improve infrastructure, protect the Public Employees’ Retirement System, and boost economic development. Mumford also advocates for broadband access and raising teachers’ salaries.

Mississippi households will need to bring a form of photo ID to vote in the special election runoff. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters can get a free voter ID if needed.
