Missouri has confirmed its first measles case of the year, according to state health officials. The child’s vaccination status is unknown, but there is no indication of widespread exposure in Taney County, where the case was diagnosed.
The case comes after a warning from Kansas City health officials that the disease may hit the area soon. Measles outbreaks have been reported in eight Kansas counties, mostly in the southwestern part of the state, with most cases driven by unvaccinated children and teens.
As of April 18, the US Centers for Disease Control has reported over 800 confirmed measles cases nationwide, with a significant number involving children under 5 years old. There have been hospitalizations and deaths, but vaccination rates remain low, with only 2% of cases involving fully vaccinated individuals.
