Missouri is monitoring reports of sick and dead waterfowl, including geese and ducks, as suspected cases of avian influenza (bird flu) have been confirmed across the state. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) advises residents to exercise caution.
The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus spreads among birds through contact with infected droppings, saliva, and nasal secretions. Although it poses a low risk to public health, MDC recommends taking precautions:
– Avoid touching or handling dead geese, waterfowl, or other bird species.
– Report any sightings of dead geese online at mdc.mo.gov.
– Prevent pets from coming into contact with dead animals.
Outdoor hunters should dress game birds in the field and dispose of waste properly to prevent transmission. Cleaning equipment thoroughly before moving it to another site can also help reduce the risk of virus transmission.
Cooking poultry and wild game to 165°F (74°C) is sufficient to kill avian influenza viruses, making them safe for consumption. For more information on the outbreak and prevention measures, visit agriculture.mo.gov/avian-influenza.php.
