MIT student Jarett Dewbury is the Faculty of Engineering Co-op Student of the Year for his work at the Tadesse Lab, addressing antimicrobial resistance in low-resource settings using AI-driven diagnostics. Collaborating with Google, Jarett’s project explored how bacterial infections can be better diagnosed in regions where current tools are too resource-intensive.
To tackle this challenge, Jarett’s team developed machine learning with Raman spectroscopy, a technique that extracts a pathogen’s unique chemical fingerprint for more efficient and low-cost diagnostics. His work focused on improving training techniques to enhance model adaptability in real-world settings, helping advance scalable solutions for antimicrobial resistance detection.
Jarett’s contributions support global healthcare efforts by providing accessible technology for diagnosing bacterial infections responsible for 30% of deaths in these regions.
