MLB Suspend Davey Martinez, Jorge Lopez Over Intentional Throwing At McCutchen

Washington Nationals manager Davey Martinez and pitcher Jorge López have been suspended by Major League Baseball after intentionally throwing at Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen during Wednesday’s game. Martinez received a one-game suspension, while López was penalized with three games off the field.

The incident occurred in the seventh inning of the contest when López hit Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds with a pitch. With two outs and a man on base, Reynolds came to bat next, but Lopez nearly struck McCutchen in the head with a 92-mph fastball. The benches cleared as a result of the near-hitting incident.

MLB reviewed the incident and determined that López and Martinez were suspended for intentionally throwing at McCutchen. Both players were also fined for their actions. Nationals shortstop Paul DeJong, who was previously hit in the face with a pitch in Tuesday’s game, may have been a factor in the league’s decision to take action.

López will appeal his three-game suspension and remain available to pitch until his appeal is heard. The suspensions come as both teams are struggling to start their season. The Nationals sit at 7-11 following Wednesday’s loss, while the Pirates improved to 7-12 with the win over Washington.
