MLB Trade Deadline Wrap-Up: Winners, Losers and Surprises

The recent MLB trade deadline saw teams across the league making moves in a chaotic market. Sellers received strong prospect packages for proven veteran players, while contending teams paid top dollar to bolster their rosters.

Top performers include Shane Bieber, who was acquired by the Blue Jays in exchange for pitching prospect Khal Stephens. Bieber’s return is a significant boost for the Jays, and could be the difference-maker this October. The Red Sox also made a savvy move with the acquisition of lefty Steven Matz from the Cardinals.

The Twins took on too much risk with their trades, shedding 11 players and alienating fans in the process. Meanwhile, the Angels failed to take advantage of the market, as Kenley Jansen and Taylor Ward could have been used to secure strong prospect returns.

The Padres were the biggest winners, landing dominant closer Mason Miller and solid back-of-the-rotation starter JP Sears. The Mariners also made big moves, adding Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez to bolster their infield. The Giants acquired Rafael Devers, who trails only new teammate Cal Raleigh in home runs this season.

In terms of value, the Mets’ trade for Tyler Rogers seemed like an overpay, while the Twins’ trades for Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax may have been too aggressive. The Red Sox’s acquisition of Bryan Baker raised eyebrows, as they gave up a competitive balance draft pick to secure a reliever.

As we look ahead to next year’s trade deadline, it’s clear that teams will be looking to make bold moves to gain an edge in the market. With many contending teams in pursuit of top talent, players like Joe Ryan and Jhostynxon Garcia may be key targets for suitors in 2025.
