Disney’s animated adventure “Moana 2” took the top spot at the movies, collecting a leading $52 million from 4,200 North American theaters in its second weekend of release. The film’s ticket sales declined by 63% from its record-breaking Thanksgiving debut.
The sequel secured the biggest post-Thanksgiving weekend, overtaking the benchmark set by “Frozen II” with $35.2 million. Despite a disappointing start, A24’s horror comedy “Y2K” debuted in eighth place with only $2.1 million from 2,108 theaters. The film received poor reviews and low ticket sales.
Universal’s “Wicked” adaptation remained a draw with $34.85 million from 3,885 theaters in its third weekend on the big screen. Paramount’s “Gladiator II” stayed at No. 3 with $12.4 million from 3,885 locations, while Indian Telugu-language action thriller “Pushpa: The Rule Part 2” secured the No. 5 spot with $5.5 million.
The post-Thanksgiving weekend box office saw a significant boost, with total grosses exceeding $132 million across all films. This marks a notable turnaround for the industry, which has lagged behind pre-pandemic times in terms of overall North American revenues.
