Disney’s animated film “Moana 2” continued to dominate the box office, adding $52 million in its second weekend and bringing its domestic total to $300 million, surpassing the original. The film also reached a staggering global tally of $600 million, setting a record gross for the weekend following Thanksgiving.
The performance marks a significant milestone for Disney, which now has three films in the top five highest-grossing releases of the year, including “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” This success is attributed to the combination of holiday leftovers like “Moana 2,” “Wicked,” and “Gladiator II.”
Industry analysts attribute the momentum to the holdovers, which will propel the box office to an estimated $8.5 billion-plus year. Pre-pandemic, the industry had reached an annual norm of $11 billion, but since then, it has struggled to reach that number.
The weekend’s newcomer releases, including A24’s horror comedy “Y2K” and Jude Law’s crime thriller “The Order,” failed to make a significant impact, with only 165 theaters showing “Interstellar” for its rerelease. However, Sony’s “Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2” earned $4.9 million, followed by “Solo Leveling – ReAwakening” at $2.4 million.
The biggest releases next weekend will include Sony’s comic book film “Kraven the Hunter” and the animated “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.” Awards contenders “Nickel Boys” and “September 5” will also open in limited theaters, according to Comscore.
