Disney’s animated film “Moana 2” continued its dominance at the box office in its second weekend, adding $52 million to bring its domestic total to $300 million and global tally to a staggering $600 million. The film broke records for Thanksgiving weekend, surpassing “Frozen II” and earning an impressive gross of $35.2 million in the same time frame last year.
The film’s success also put Disney at the top of the charts, with three films in the top five highest-grossing releases of the year. Other notable box office hits include “Wicked,” which added $34.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $320.5 million globally, and “Gladiator II,” which earned $12.5 million.
Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian said that holdover films will create momentum for a potential record-breaking year at the box office, with some predicting an $8.5 billion-plus year. The industry has made significant progress since pre-pandemic numbers, with the closest it came to reaching $11 billion was last year’s $9 billion.
Newcomers “Y2K” and “The Order” struggled to make a significant impact, earning less than $3 million combined. However, some releases performed well, including the re-release of Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” which earned an estimated $4.4 million.
