New mobile spyware has been discovered, targeting Android users and spreading through messengers disguised as antivirus software. The malware, known as LunaSpy, can gain access to smartphones by installing fake security apps or sending malicious messages.
Here’s how it works: a victim receives a message suggesting they install an app or program from someone they know, which is actually a phishing attempt. Once installed, the fake app claims to have detected threats on the device and asks for full permissions to protect it. Unbeknownst to the user, this allows the malware to spy on them.
LunaSpy’s capabilities include stealing passwords, recording audio and video, reading texts and call logs, running arbitrary shell commands, tracking geolocation, and recording screens. All collected data is sent to command-and-control servers.
To protect yourself from LunaSpy:
– Never download apps from third-party sources.
– Disable the ability to install unknown applications.
– Check which apps you give permission to, being wary if an antivirus or security solution requires too many permissions without clear reasons.
– Use Kaspersky for Android to detect spyware and malware.
– Only trust trusted developers and proven solutions.
Remember, protecting yourself from LunaSpy is crucial, even though it’s not as powerful as other major threats. Stay vigilant and keep your devices safe.
