Modder’s GTA 6 Map in GTA 5 Gets Copyright Claim from Rockstar Owner

A modder trying to recreate GTA 6’s map in GTA 5 has faced a copyright claim from Take-Two, the owner of Rockstar Games. Dark Space, a YouTube creator, had been working on the project, which was inspired by the Mapping Vice City community effort. However, after uploading a video showcasing his progress, Take-Two removed the content without warning.

Dark Space acknowledged that he expected this reaction and believes his map might be too accurate, which could have ruined the surprise of Rockstar’s official map. The move comes as Take-Two has been cracking down on modders in the past, including shutting down the Liberty City Preservation Project.

The situation highlights the challenges faced by modders who try to recreate content from upcoming games. Meanwhile, GTA 6 is still expected to release in autumn 2025, although some reports suggest a delay. The game’s PC version is also in development, with Take-Two partnering with Cfx.re to create an official conversion tool for mods.
