Moderate Drinking May Increase Dementia Risk

A major study found that even light drinking can increase dementia risk, regardless of the amount consumed. Researchers analyzed data from over 559,000 participants and discovered an “U-shaped” association between alcohol consumption and dementia, meaning that both heavy drinkers and non-drinkers had a higher risk compared to moderate drinkers. The analysis also revealed that genetically predicted risks for problematic drinking increased with more alcohol intake, but no protective effects were found in low-level drinkers.
