Moderate Drinking May Not Be as Safe as Thought

Experts agree that while it’s okay to drink, relying on self-reported data can be problematic. They found that increasing alcohol intake invariably increases dementia risk. In fact, every threefold increase in drinking prevalence is associated with a 15% increased risk of dementia.

The study also showed that moderate drinking was linked to smaller gray matter and increased iron in the brain, which has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

So, how can you manage your alcohol intake? Experts suggest trying challenges like Sober October or Dry January, working with a doctor for heavier drinkers, and avoiding binge drinking. You can also spread out your intake, reduce ethanol percentage, and alternate drinks with soft drinks.
