Moldovan Breakaway Region Cut Off from Gas Supplies

A breakaway region in Moldova, Transnistria, has lost access to heating and hot water supplies after Russia stopped delivering gas via Ukraine due to a transit deal expiration. The situation affects 1,500 Russian troops stationed there.

Residents are advised to use electric heaters, dress warmly, and gather together for warmth. Facilities like hospitals remain exempt from the cuts.

Transnistria has been pro-Russian since its separation from Moldova in 1991. A statement by local energy company Tirasteploenergo warned against using gas or electric stoves for heating, citing safety risks.

The region has a long-standing dispute with Ukraine over gas supplies, with Moscow accused of exploiting Moldova’s dependence on Russia to destabilize the country.
