Hollywood stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black have teamed up for a comedy adaptation of the popular video game “Minecraft.” Directed by Jared Hess, the film follows Steve, played by Black, who finds himself trapped in an alternate dimension called Overworld. When a portal is opened to this new world, three people – Garett (Momoa), Dawn, and siblings Natalie and Henry – are transported into it.
The movie’s creators faced pressure to cater to the game’s massive fan base while also entertaining audiences. Momoa, who produced the film and starred in it, said it was his first comedy role, adding that he had fun playing Steve, a character with no voice or personality. Black praised Hess for keeping him in check during filming.
The movie was over a decade in the making, but its success can be attributed to centering on a single scenario. The title of the film itself proved helpful, as it inspired thousands of Minecraft players to create their own stories within the game’s community.
“A Minecraft Movie” is set to begin its global cinematic rollout this week, with Jennifer Coolidge also starring in the film.
