Actress Monica Barbaro stars in two high-profile films, Top Gun: Maverick and A Complete Unknown, showcasing her range as a performer. In an interview with NME, Barbaro revealed that filming Top Gun was less intimidating than singing live on stage like Joan Baez.
In Top Gun: Maverick, Barbaro played the lead female role alongside Tom Cruise’s iconic character Maverick. The film follows the Maverick team as they undergo intense flight training to take down an enemy fighter jet. While this experience tested Barbaro physically and mentally, she compared her time in the Navy jets to singing live with Baez.
Barbaro revealed that singing on stage was more daunting for her, especially since it required playing guitar and performing live. She said, “Having to sing and play guitar live was more terrifying to me than anything I did in Top Gun.” Her respect for musicians skyrocketed after taking on the role of Joan Baez.
In contrast, the Top Gun: Maverick cast underwent three months of flight training to prepare for their roles. This included intense physical training with Tom Cruise himself. While this experience pushed them to their limits, Barbaro found singing live more challenging.
Barbaro’s performances in both films have received critical acclaim, showcasing her ability to take on complex roles and excel as a performer. Her willingness to challenge herself has earned her recognition in the industry.
