Monolith Productions’ Wonder Woman Game Canceled, Studio Shut Down

Warner Bros. Games has canceled its Wonder Woman game and shut down Monolith Productions as part of a larger restructuring effort. The move comes after the publisher’s 2024 film “Suicide Squad” underperformed and the platform fighter MultiVersus failed to regain popularity.

In a statement, Warner Bros. confirmed that it made difficult decisions to focus on its key franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The company is closing three development studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego.

Monolith’s Wonder Woman game was rebooted last year but ultimately fell short due to challenges in incorporating the studio’s patented nemesis system for evolving relationships with NPCs. This decision is not a reflection on the team’s talent, but rather a strategic change to prioritize quality over quantity.

The company is also closing Player First Games, behind MultiVersus, and WB San Diego, which had been working on an unannounced “AAA” free-to-play game. Warner Bros. Discovery head JB Perrette acknowledged that the studio needs to regain credibility in producing great games and rebuild its financial credibility. The company aims to deliver high-quality experiences for fans and secure future investments.

Rocksteady Studios is reportedly pivoting back to single-player projects with a new Batman game, while WB Games Montreal pitches a possible Game of Thrones game. Long-time Warner Bros. Games head David Haddad recently announced his departure from the company.
