A Montana animal shelter was evacuated after a cloud of smoke from seized methamphetamine filled the building, sending 14 workers to the hospital. The FBI used an incinerator at the shelter to burn the drugs, but a fan was not available to reverse the pressure, causing the smoke to spread.
Fourteen staff members experienced severe symptoms, including headaches, sore throats, and dizziness, while 75 dogs and cats were relocated or placed in foster homes. The shelter will remain closed until it can be tested for contamination.
The FBI’s use of an incinerator at the shelter is routine, but officials are unsure if it was operated correctly on Wednesday. A company hired to assess and clean up the building is conducting air quality tests before remediation work begins.
