A gunman has killed 12 people, including two children, and seriously injured four others in southern Montenegro. The shootings began at a restaurant in the village of Bajice near Cetinje on Wednesday.
The shooter, Aleksandar Martinović, 45, turned his gun on himself after being cornered by police. He died from his self-inflicted injuries during transport to hospital.
According to authorities, the victims were killed at five different locations, with four of them in the restaurant. The government has declared three days of national mourning and is considering tighter firearms laws.
The gunman had a history of violent behavior, including being given a suspended sentence for violent behavior in 2005. He was known for his erratic behavior and had spent time drinking heavily on New Year’s Day before committing the crime.
Montenegro’s president said he was “shocked and stunned” by the killings, while the prime minister described the shootings as a “terrible tragedy”. The country is known for its deep-rooted gun culture, but mass shootings are rare.
