Montenegro Mass Shooting Leaves 10 Dead, Suspect on the Run

A gunman has killed at least 10 people in a rampage through a small town in Montenegro, one of the country’s worst mass killings. Aleksandar Martinovic, a 45-year-old man with a history of illegal weapons possession, opened fire at a restaurant in Cetinje, killing four people. He then moved on to three other locations, gunning down a family member, two children, and three others before police deployed a drone to search for him.

Four more people suffered life-threatening injuries, and the suspect was still on the run as of Wednesday evening. Police said he had been drinking heavily before the shooting and that it was not connected to organized crime. The incident has shocked the country of 605,000 people, with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic declaring three days of national mourning.

Montenegro’s president, Jakov Milatovic, described the attack as “terrible” and called for recovery of the wounded. Authorities have vowed to consider tightening gun laws, including a possible ban on firearms. The Western Balkans region remains awash with weapons, and mass shootings are relatively rare in Montenegro.
