A gunman, identified as Aco Martinovic, 45, killed 12 people, including two children, in a series of shootings in southern Montenegro on New Year’s Day. The attack began when Martinovic got into an altercation with another guest at a restaurant, leading him to retrieve a weapon and start his rampage.
Martinovic targeted customers at the restaurant and five other locations, killing family members and innocent bystanders. Four people were seriously wounded in the shooting, including three who remain in stable but life-threatening condition.
The government has declared three days of national mourning, with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic calling the incident “a consequence of disturbed interpersonal relations”. Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic warned that the country’s security council will consider measures to protect the public, including a potential ban on weapon possession.
Mass shootings are rare in Montenegro, but the country has experienced similar violence in the past. The attack comes just days after a similar incident in 2022, where a man killed several people following a family dispute in Cetinje.
