Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts suffered a toe injury during an off-field incident and is expected to miss the next two games against the Yankees. Manager Dave Roberts said Betts will not start on Saturday or Sunday but hopes he will return to the lineup shortly thereafter.
Betts, 32, has been playing with a fracture in his second toe after banging it against furniture at his home late Wednesday night. He underwent X-rays and was diagnosed with a fracture. The Dodgers’ training staff is working to reduce swelling in his toe, and Roberts believes the injury cannot be made worse by playing on it.
However, this is not the only injury concern for the Dodgers. Late-inning reliever Evan Phillips, who was rehabbing a forearm injury, underwent Tommy John surgery next week and will miss all of 2025 and most of 2026. Phillips had been a valuable late-game option for the team, posting a 2.21 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in his last two seasons.
The Dodgers are now facing significant depth issues with several high-leverage relievers on the injured list, including Brusdar Graterol, Blake Treinen, Kirby Yates, and Michael Kopech. They have tried to backfill some of that depth by trading for former All-Star closer Alexis Diaz, but he will initially work out of the spring training complex in Arizona.
The lineup has been healthy, but Betts’ injury is a concern. Miguel Rojas will continue to play shortstop while Betts recovers. The Dodgers are hopeful that the toe injury won’t set him back much longer than the rest of this weekend and will be able to get him back in the lineup soon.
