A Moroccan community leader has called for calm in the Spanish town of Torre Pacheco, where anti-migrant clashes have occurred between North African migrants and far-right groups. The unrest began after an attack on a local man in his 60s last week.
At least 14 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, including three Moroccan citizens suspected of involvement in the assault. Authorities have deployed over 120 Civil Guard officers to maintain security in the town.
Xenophobic messages on social media have also sparked tensions, with some users calling for “hunting down” residents of North African origin. In response, community leaders are urging calm and advising younger members to stay home after dozens took to the streets, clashing with police and far-right groups.
“We want peace… We don’t want criminals, we don’t want violence or people who come from outside to make trouble here,” said an informal spokesperson for the Moroccan community. Police arrested several protesters overnight after a confrontation in a predominantly migrant neighborhood.
Spain’s top hate crimes prosecutor is investigating the events, as well as social media messages inciting violence against migrants. The leader of far-right party Vox has been accused by Spain’s ruling Socialist Party of linking immigration to criminality in speeches and posts.
The incidents have raised concerns about rising xenophobia and anti-migrant sentiment in Spain.
