The Erie County Department of Health has confirmed a second mosquito sample positive for West Nile virus, collected on July 2 in the City of Erie. This marks the second positive sample in the county so far this year.
No human cases have been reported. To prevent further transmission, health officials will monitor and control the area where the infected mosquitoes were found.
West Nile virus can cause serious illness, particularly among older adults and those with weakened immune systems. Residents are advised to eliminate standing water around their homes, which helps prevent mosquito breeding.
To reduce mosquito breeding:
– Dispose of items that collect water
– Clean roof gutters and check for clogged drains
– Empty water from toys and containers when not in use
– Maintain birdbaths and ornamental pools with fish
– Use DEET-based repellents and ensure window screens are intact
– Stay indoors during peak mosquito hours: dawn, dusk, and early evening.
