A new tool that assesses heart health has revealed that most Americans are not aging well despite their chronological age. The “heart age” calculator, which uses standard measures like blood pressure and cholesterol, shows that over half of adults have hearts older than their actual age. This disparity is more pronounced among certain groups, such as black men and women, who experience wider gaps between their heart age and chronological age.
According to the study, women’s heart age was 55.4, compared to a chronological age of 51.3, while men’s average heart age was 56.7, with a chronological age of 49.7. The study also found that having a high school education or less added 10 years to heart age.
The researchers hope that this new tool will encourage individuals to make lifestyle changes, such as adopting healthier diets and exercising more. However, some experts caution that the information could be demoralizing for those who are already struggling with limited resources or competing life demands.
