Nearly two-thirds of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on international trade. The majority believes the tariffs will drive up inflation, outweighing hopes that they’ll boost manufacturing employment.
A recent poll shows that 47% of Republicans think tariffs will negatively impact inflation, while 75% of independents share this concern. Even Democrats are opposed to the tariffs, with 90% believing they’ll hurt inflation and U.S. economic leadership in the world.
The survey also found that only 59% of Americans believe the tariffs will have a positive impact on creating manufacturing jobs in the United States. However, when considering their overall handling of tariffs, Trump’s rating is significantly underwater, 30 percentage points lower than his immigration approval rating.
Disapproval of Trump’s handling of tariffs reaches 48% among non-college-educated white men and 47% of rural Americans, two groups that are core to his support base. The poll suggests that public sentiment on tariffs is especially prickly when economic well-being is at stake.
