Mounjaro Proves More Effective in Head-to-Head Weight Loss Trial

Two popular weight-loss drugs, Mounjaro and Wegovy, have been tested in a head-to-head trial that found Mounjaro to be more effective than its rival. After 72 weeks of treatment, participants taking Mounjaro lost an average of 20% of their body weight, compared to 14% for those taking Wegovy.

The drugs work by tricking the brain into feeling full, reducing appetite and increasing fat burning. However, subtle differences in how they function may explain the difference in effectiveness. Mounjaro mimics two hormones released by the body, while Wegovy mimics one hormone that flips a single switch in the brain.

In the trial involving 750 obese individuals, those taking Mounjaro lost more weight, had better blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and experienced fewer side effects than those taking Wegovy. Women also tended to lose more weight than men.

While both drugs are available for obesity treatment, Wegovy is also licensed for preventing heart attacks. The results of the trial suggest that Mounjaro may be a better option for those at the higher end of the weight loss spectrum.

As research into weight-loss drugs continues, it’s clear that we’re still far from determining the final winner in this field. However, the findings of this trial and others like it may lead to the development of new obesity prevention strategies, including oral pills and more effective treatments.
