Spencer Rathkamp’s passion for mountain biking transformed his life from being shy at 7 to becoming a professional rider. Growing up in Santa Clarita Valley, he was drawn to riding bikes after his father was involved in the motocross industry. With his dad’s influence, Spencer started building dirt jumps and rode with others.
In high school, Mountain Bike Action magazine discovered him and encouraged him to try organized mountain bike racing. Rathkamp joined a local NICA chapter and began racing, eventually becoming “decently successful.” He interned at the magazine, making valuable connections that led to sponsorship deals.
The city of Santa Clarita is set to develop 15 miles of trails in the Haskell Canyon Bike Park Project. Rathkamp sees this as an opportunity for the community to grow and become a destination for mountain biking. The project will cater to both beginners and professionals, allowing riders to progress and enjoy themselves.
Mountain biking’s popularity soared during the COVID-19 pandemic, but its impact on the local community has been lasting. Groups are working together for maintenance days and organizing community events, such as bike clinics. Rathkamp credits his passion for mountain biking with opening doors to travel, racing, and meeting incredible people.
From a shy child to a professional rider, Rathkamp’s story showcases the transformative power of mountain biking.
