Mozambique Prison Escape Amid Election Protests and Unrest

At least 1,500 prisoners escaped from a prison in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, as protests against disputed election results turned violent. Thirty-three people were killed and 15 injured in clashes with guards. The unrest began on Monday when the constitutional court confirmed that the ruling Frelimo party had won the presidential election, despite initially showing a wider margin of victory for its candidate.

The prison break occurred after groups of anti-government protesters approached the facility, taking advantage of the chaos to knock down a wall and escape. Meanwhile, protests and looting have plagued the country since October’s disputed elections. At least 21 people have been killed in the unrest, with Frelimo offices, police stations, banks, and factories being targeted.

The ruling party’s candidate, Daniel Chapo, won the election by a revised margin of 65% to VenĂ¢ncio Mondlane’s 24%. Mondlane had called on his supporters to demonstrate against what he believed was a rigged vote. The interior minister reported that at least 150 people have been killed in protests since the elections.
