Clashes between prisoners and authorities in Mozambique’s capital have resulted in at least 33 deaths and over a dozen injuries during the country’s third day of civil unrest. The violence, sparked by the disputed presidential election result, has also led to over 1,500 inmates escaping from prisons.
The riot began inside the prison and was not directly related to protests outside, according to national police chief Bernardino Rafael. However, interior minister Pascoal Ronda blamed supporters of losing presidential candidate Venancio Mondlan for starting the violence.
As tensions escalate, justice minister Helena Kida warned that a rise in crime is expected in the next 48 hours. Mozambique has been on edge since October’s general election, which was marred by allegations of rigging and widespread protests. The ruling Frelimo party won nearly 65% of the vote, but its opponent claims the result was unfair.
The country’s situation remains tense, with protesters taking to the streets to celebrate Christmas in some areas, while others have set up tables to occupy public spaces. Mozambique, a nation of 34 million people, has been grappling with the aftermath of the disputed election since October.
