At least 21 people have been killed in protests in Mozambique following a contentious election result. The government’s top court confirmed the governing party Frelimo’s victory, despite allegations of vote rigging.
Protesters and opposition groups claim the October 9 vote was rigged. In response, security measures have been tightened across the country with the armed forces increasing their presence at critical points. Seventy-eight people have been arrested so far.
The protests began on Monday night after the election announcement, with protesters burning tyres and blocking roads in Maputo. Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has called for “difficult days ahead” as supporters brace themselves for unrest.
According to human rights groups, more than 130 people have been killed since October 21. The government has denied allegations of excessive violence used to quell the protests.
