MSU Nears Big Ten Title with Win over Wisconsin

Michigan State basketball is one step closer to claiming the Big Ten regular-season title after a 71-62 victory over No. 11 Wisconsin on Sunday. The win, coupled with No. 13 Michigan’s loss to Illinois, puts MSU in first place in the conference standings entering the final week of the season.

The Spartans (24-5, 15-3 Big Ten) have secured a double-bye in the Big Ten tournament and are poised to secure at least a share of the championship with two more wins. If they can beat Iowa on Thursday and then take down Michigan next Sunday, Tom Izzo will tie Bob Knight’s record for most conference victories and win his fourth outright Big Ten title.

MSU freshman Jase Richardson scored 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the game, saying “This was one of the bigger ones that we needed to get… It puts us in that driver’s seat of the Big Ten.” Izzo credited his team’s success to their unity, saying “I got a group of guys that, for the most part, have bought in.”

The Spartans will host Iowa on Thursday and then face Michigan next Sunday. A win in either game would give MSU its first outright Big Ten title since 2018 and cement Izzo’s legacy as one of the greatest coaches in conference history.
