Delta State University student Trey Reed died by suicide, according to the autopsy results announced by Cleveland Police Chief Travis Tribble on Thursday afternoon. The 21-year-old was found hanging in a tree on campus on September 15.
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on September 17, which confirmed that the cause of death was hanging and the manner of death as suicide. However, toxicology results are still pending and may take several weeks to complete.
As part of the investigation, all files have been turned over to the FBI and US Attorney’s Office for review. The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office also found no signs of foul play on Reed’s body.
Reed’s family is seeking an independent autopsy and investigation into his death, while civil rights activists, lawyers, and politicians are calling for a full and independent probe. Cleveland Police Chief Tribble expressed condolences to the family and condemned rumors surrounding Reed’s death.
The state’s public safety commissioner, Sean Tindell, also offered his sympathies to the family and praised the quick response of authorities in bringing closure to the family.
