A fire and explosion occurred at an electrical substation in New York City’s subway system, causing a power outage that stranded thousands of F train passengers underground for two hours on Wednesday night.
Approximately 3,500 passengers were affected, with four people suffering minor injuries. The incident happened during the evening rush hour, around 5:30 p.m., between the Jay Street/MetroTech and Hoyt-Schermerhorn stations.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber blamed an “old piece of our system” for the incident, stating that it should have been repaired decades ago. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the experience “unacceptable” and ordered a review to determine the cause of the delay.
Lieber acknowledged that the substation’s malfunction may be linked to aging infrastructure in the MTA system. Hochul directed the MTA to work with Con Edison to identify the root cause of the incident and prevent similar delays in the future.
