The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is exploring the use of drones to track its fleet of 6,000 buses, but union representatives are raising concerns about job losses. The agency is seeking qualified vendors to develop or implement drone technology that can provide real-time data on bus locations and operations.
According to a recent request for information posted on the MTA’s website, the agency aims to use drones to survey depot facilities, monitor traffic patterns along bus routes, and improve fleet management. The proposal has sparked concerns among union representatives, who argue that drones could replace jobs currently held by bus supervisors and dispatchers.
“We do that work, that’s our job,” said Michael Carrube, president of the Subway-Surface Supervisors Association. “How the hell is a drone going to do that job?”
The MTA has already successfully used NYPD drones to track subway activity in recent years, including detecting individuals surfing on top of moving trains. However, the agency’s plans for using drones to track buses have raised questions about the impact on jobs and workforce.
“We wish to address the challenges of maintaining accurate and up-to-date vehicle location tracking,” said Kayla Shults, a spokesperson for the MTA, in response to union concerns.
