Christmas Day proved to be a box office success for Disney’s live-action “Mufasa: The Lion King,” with viewers contributing $14.7 million to the film’s domestic earnings, taking the top spot on the Christmas box office.
The film, which initially saw a dip in ticket sales after its opening day, rebounded with a strong performance on Christmas Day. This marks one of director Robert Eggers’ best openings ever, according to reports.
Other notable films released on December 20 also performed well, including “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “A Complete Unknown,” starring Timothée Chalamet. The latter’s opening day gross was $7.2 million, with expected earnings of $22 million in its first five days.
The holiday season has seen a relatively strong box office year, with total earnings reaching $8.2 billion through over 635 releases. However, the domestic box office still lags behind pre-pandemic levels, which saw annual earnings exceed $11 billion between 2015 and 2019.
