A paratha purchase made by Google Pay led Mumbai Police to track down Shariful Islam Shehzad, who is accused of stabbing Saif Ali Khan six times in a suspected attempted burglary incident. The 30-member police team worked tirelessly to follow up on leads and surveillance footage to finally apprehend the suspect.
Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national living illegally in India, had been on the run since the attack on Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan at his home in Mumbai’s posh Bandra West area. The police believe he sneaked past the high-profile building’s security by jumping over the compound wall and entering via a rear staircase.
The hunt for Shehzad included forming teams to scan hours of security footage, including those from Saif Ali Khan’s building, as well as spotting him on CCTV in Andheri. The police also tracked his phone signal, which went offline after he turned it off following the attack.
Shehzad was initially spotted at a bus stop in Bandra, and later, on a train to Worli, before eventually being caught inside the bedroom of Saif Ali Khan’s youngest son. He reportedly told police that he did not know he was in the Bollywood star’s home during the scuffle that led to Khan’s stabbing.
Shehzad has been sent to police custody for five days, with his lawyer claiming innocence and suggesting that he is being framed because a celebrity is involved. However, the suspect himself admitted to committing the crime when questioned by police.
