Music Icon Jerry Butler Passes Away at 85

Jerry Butler, the legendary R&B singer and songwriter known as “The Ice Man,” has died at the age of 85. According to a family friend, Butler passed away on February 20 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Butler’s music career spanned over five decades, starting with his time in the group The Impressions. He was a key figure in the development of soul and R&B music, with hits like “He Will Break Your Heart,” “Only the Strong Survive,” and “Ain’t Understanding Mellow.” Butler’s collaborations with other artists, including Otis Redding, helped shape his success.

Butler served on the Cook County Board Commissioner from 1986 to 2018, taking a break from recording to pursue politics. He released several albums throughout his career, with over 50 credits to his name. In 2004, he published a memoir, “Only the Strong Survive: Memoirs of a Soul Survivor.”

Butler’s legacy extends beyond his music and political career. He was a devoted husband and father, and his wife Annette, who worked as one of his background singers, passed away in 2019.

Butler is survived by his sons, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Despite his passing, he will be remembered for his impact on the music industry and his contributions to the community.
