The book is often the tricky part to get right in musical theater. If characters don’t have a reason to sing, blame the script. A convoluted and rushed narrative was initially criticized by Sara Holdren’s review of “Buena Vista Social Club.” Director Saheem Ali and writer Marco Ramirez took feedback but instead of revising it, they cut as much of the story as possible, leaving the production with a thin foundation.
