Musk Backs Indian-Origin Whistleblower’s Mother on Son’s Sudden Death

Elon Musk has backed Suchir Balaji’s mother, Poornima Ramarao, in her claims that her son’s death may not have been a suicide. Balaji, a former employee at OpenAI, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment with signs of struggle and foul play. The company had previously employed him as an artificial intelligence researcher for nearly four years.

Balaji had accused OpenAI of violating copyright laws and believed that the technology would harm society more than benefit it. Musk’s X post suggests he shares her concerns, saying “This doesn’t seem like a suicide.” A medical officer initially ruled Balaji’s death as a suicide, but his mother has requested an FBI investigation, citing evidence from a private autopsy that contradicts the police conclusion.

Balaji had been critical of OpenAI’s use of copyrighted data and claimed that technologies like ChatGPT were damaging the internet. His mother recalled that he had spoken out against AI because he believed it was harming humanity. The incident has sparked renewed attention to Balaji’s concerns about the ethics of artificial intelligence.
