SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is supporting calls for a national inquiry in the United Kingdom into the child abuse scandal involving grooming gangs, particularly those of South Asian or British Pakistani heritage. He described the scandal as “the worst mass crime against the people of Britain ever.”
The UK has been grappling with the issue of child sex abuse by grooming gangs across various cities and towns, including Manchester, Telford, and Rotherham. A 2014 review in Rotherham found that around 1,400 children were abused between 1997 and 2013, with perpetrators mainly from Pakistani heritage.
The report revealed that police failed to prioritize the abuse cases, and local authorities ignored or suppressed reports of child abuse. Some staff were afraid to identify the ethnic origins of perpetrators due to concerns about being perceived as racist.
Elon Musk has now joined the chorus of calls for a national inquiry, with Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch saying it’s “long overdue.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer had been head of the Crown Prosecution Service at the time of the scandals but opposed an inquiry, citing concerns that it would show complicity in the cover-up.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting welcomed Musk’s involvement, stating that he has a role to play in tackling the issue through his social media platform.
