Musk Blames Ukraine for Twitter Outage Following Cyberattack

Twitter owner Elon Musk blamed a cyberattack from Ukraine for the recent outage on his platform X. The billionaire said during a Fox Business interview that there was a “massive cyberattack” aimed at taking down the system, with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area. However, cybersecurity experts caution against jumping to conclusions and say it’s too early to determine the cause of the attack.

The issues began around 6 am ET when up to 20,538 users reported problems on outage tracking site DownDetector. The problems temporarily died down before nearly 40,000 users reported outages at 10 am. Musk said the platform was working again by the time he spoke with Fox Business in the 4 pm ET hour.

Some have questioned Musk’s motives behind blaming a cyberattack, given his history of attributing technical issues to such incidents. In August 2024, he blamed a delayed conversation on X with Donald Trump on a “probability” of a DDOS attack.

Musk implemented major changes to X after acquiring the platform in 2022, including cutting over half its workforce and requiring employees to return to office full-time. The platform has since experienced several glitches and disruptions.

Tesla shares also fell 15% on Monday, erasing gains since Trump’s November election. This story is developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
