US President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk believes the country needs to eliminate “many” government agencies entirely. In a recent speech at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Musk compared his efforts to rid the federal government of waste to removing weeds from a garden. He emphasized that leaving part of an agency intact would be ineffective and likened it to allowing a weed to grow back.
Musk’s initiative has led to controversy, with Democratic lawmakers and others accusing Trump and Musk of operating outside the law. The effort has also sparked numerous lawsuits and court challenges to limit its scope. However, Musk believes that the US government is too bureaucratic and overregulated. He aims to restore “rule of the people democracy” by reducing the size of the federal government and regulations.
The move comes as part of a broader effort to reshape the federal government, including offering buyouts to hundreds of thousands of workers and gaining access to sensitive payment systems within Treasury agencies.
